Fencing Terms for the Beginner

On Guard – the basic position in fencing and the stance used in preparing to fence
Advance – a step forward while remaining in the On Guard position; must be done with balance
Retreat – a step backward while remaining in the On Guard position; must be done with balance
Extend – straightening of one’s fencing arm toward the an imaginary or real opponent
Touche (pronounced as tush) – a hit made to the opponent; it must be within the valid target; valid target depends on the weapon you use
Parry – a blocking action so that the opponent will not hit you
Lunge – kicking the front foot and landing with the rear leg straight
Salute – the respectful action toward your opponent; fencing is a gentleman’s sport
Bout – the duel itself; a match
